Community Outreach in Action is a publication of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District. The Corps of Engineers is one of the leading agencies responsible for the protection and health of the lake. The Corps also operates and maintains the Herbert Hoover Dike that surrounds the giant lake. The fall 2008 issue is called “Lake Okeechobee: We Care!” It covers the role of Lake Okeechobee in central and south Florida, programs to protect it, and how to get involved. The issue also coincides with the introduction of a new traveling van and storybook – both about the lake – being released this fall by the Corps of Engineers. “Lake Okeechobee and the Herbert Hoover Dike play a role in the lives of all residents of central and south Florida,” explains Nanciann Regalado, strategic communication and outreach program manager for the Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District. “The newspaper insert will help bring news of the lake and dike to residents in an engaging manner, and we hope encourages involvement in the protection of these water-related resources.” The fall Community Outreach in Action is being distributed in 17 community newspapers between throughout the month of December. Newspapers are located in Broward, Collier, Hendry, Lee, Miami-Dade, Okeechobee, Orange and Palm Beach counties. The color inserts are sent to social service organizations and are distributed at local events, as well. Special efforts are made to distribute it to African-American residents throughout central and south Florida. The issue is available online at www.evergladesplan.org/news/news_outreach_action.aspx.
