(BPRW) Target Celebrates Black History Month with Inspirational Dream in Color Campaign and Exclusive Products

Target Partners with India.Arie and The Black List to offer exclusive DVDs

(Black PR WIRE) MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Target® encourages its guests to “dare, dream, do” during Black History Month and all year long through “Dream in Color,” a multilayer national educational campaign designed to encourage people everywhere to celebrate diversity. The program, which provides an unparalleled view of the African American experience through inspirational firsthand stories, is available at Target.com/dreamincolor.

Since 2006, the “Dream in Color” campaign has highlighted inspirational stories from a number of influencers, including Debbie Allen, Iman, John Legend, Maya Angelou and Sylvia Woods. This year’s “dreamers” include actress/philanthropist Holly Robinson Peete, singer-songwriter/philanthropist India.Arie, agent/activist Bethann Hardison and museum curator Thelma Golden. As part of the “Dream in Color” program, Target partnered with the Smithsonian Institution to offer free online lesson plans, resources, curriculum ideas and activities for educators of elementary, junior high and high school students to further encourage classroom celebrations (Scholastic.com/dreamincolor).

“Target understands that diversity is a story that needs to be shared all year long,” said Greg Cunningham, group manager, marketing, Target. “Our ‘Dream in Color’ campaign recognizes the unique stories and accomplishments of multicultural leaders throughout the year. Through our partnerships with India.Arie and The Black List Vol. 1, we are also able to offer our guests exclusive products that further celebrate diversity.”

Two-time Grammy Award winner, India.Arie, and Target have also partnered to create an exclusive DVD to accompany her new CD, Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics. The DVD includes “Dream in Color” inspired testimonials and behind-the-scenes footage. The CD and DVD will be available exclusively at Target stores nationwide on February 10 and are a great value at $15.99.

The Black List Vol. 1 will be available exclusively at Target stores nationwide beginning February 1 for $9.99. The Black List Vol. 1 showcases prominent African Americans, including Russell Simmons, Serena Williams, Chris Rock, Toni Morrison and Colin Powell, and offers their stories and insights on the struggles, triumphs and joys of black life in America and, in the process, redefines “black list” for a new generation. The powerful documentary was created by award-winning journalist Elvis Mitchell and renowned photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, and premiered on HBO in August 2007 to much critical acclaim including a recent nomination by NAACP Image Awards for Most Outstanding Film. The Black List Vol. 2 will premiere with 15 new storytellers including T.D. Jakes, Angela Davis and Laurence Fishburne on February 26 on HBO.

In addition to The Black List Vol. 1 documentary exclusive, Target also carries a number of affordable historic DVDs. Some of the available inspirational films include: Barack Obama - The Man and His Journey, a documentary about our 44th U.S. president; King, a History Channel documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; The Great Debaters, based on the true story of the all-African American debate team; The Express, a film based on the true story of Ernie Davis, the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy; A Raisin in the Sun, a remake of the 1961 classic; The Color Purple, the academy award-winning film adaptation of Alice Walker’s novel; and The Spike Lee Joint Collection, a collection of the director’s popular films.
