(BPRW) "WE CANNOT WALK ALONE" CELEBRATING REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. AND HIS HOLIDAY

(BLACK PR WIRE)--If you can’t fly, then run,
if you can’t run, then walk,
if you can’t walk, then crawl,
but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward!
"‹"‹Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Opa-locka - PLEASE join Vice-Mayor Joseph L. Kelley of “The Great” City of Opa-locka, with special guest, the Magnificent Miami Heat Dancers, as he proudly host the 31st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. WALK which will begin on the corner of 151st Street and 27th Avenue and proceed west to President Barack Obama (Perviz) Avenue, then South to Sherbondy Village on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 9:00 AM., sponsored by the Mayor and the City Commission!

Reminiscent of the 1960s when civil right leaders would gather early in the morning before marching peacefully through cities in protest of injustice and in support of citizen rights, participants sang spirituals as they marched. Vice Mayor Kelley will continue shouldering the responsibility of moving forward with the tradition of Opa-locka’s MLK WALK, which his mother, former Commissioner Ollie B. Kelley, founded in 1982, making the City first in the State of Florida to honor Dr. King’s Birthday as a legal Holiday.

Symbolic of her pioneering vision 31-years ago, former Commissioner Kelley will lead the march down 151st Street to President Barack Obama (Perviz) Avenue, when marchers will pause for a brief “prayer stop” before heading to Sherbondy Village, where the celebration will continue with a festive program, refreshments and more surprise guest. Community organizations, churches, businesses, vendors, speakers and the community at large will collaborate for this monumental day of commemoration, honoring the life and work of the slain civil rights legend.

Winners of the Martin Luther King Essay Competition, chosen from local Elementary and Middle schools, will receive gift cards, followed by the MLK Basketball Classic in the Sherbondy Village gym where City employees will challenge the Opa-locka Police Department in the preliminary basketball game, followed by community teams, competing for the annual rotating trophy.

We invite you to “WALK” with us at this FREE event, for the entire family!
