November marks National Diabetes Month
(Black PR Wire) MIAMI, FL – November is National Diabetes Month, a time to encourage healthier habits that help prevent and manage diabetes. In light of this, Jessie Trice Community Health System, Inc. (JTCHS) joins the numerous healthcare providers and organizations nationwide in raising awareness about diabetes and encouraging individuals to take proactive steps toward prevention and healthier living.
According to the Office of Minority Health, in 2024, non-Hispanic Black or African American adults were diagnosed with diabetes 24% more frequently than adults in the total population. This disparity highlights the importance of community-based prevention efforts.
“Awareness is the first step toward prevention. Know your risk, make healthy choices, and take control of your health and future,” said Dr. Joycelyn Lawrence, chief medical officer of JTCHS.
Risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes include being overweight or obese, physical inactivity and family history. Lifestyle changes play a critical role in reducing the risk of diabetes. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, and effective weight management are key components in managing and preventing diabetes.
As part of its mission to improve the health and well-being of the communities it serves, JTCHS provides a wide range of services and resources to help individuals take control of their health.
