(BPRW) Legacy’s ‘Surviving COVID-19’ issue bests competitors to earn top honors during SPJ’s Sunshine State Awards

Legacy Magazine Miami and South Florida Magazine’s issues are distributed in the Miami Herald and Sun-Sentinel, respectively.

Hollywood, Fla. – M•I•A MEDIA GROUP LLC, publisher of Legacy Miami and Legacy South Florida, the premier publications for South Florida’s Black influencers and affluencers, proudly announces its recent recognition as a first-place winner during the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Florida Pro Chapter’s 2021 Sunshine State Awards. Legacy’s “Surviving COVID-19” issues earned the highest award in the category of best trade or special interest publication. Legacy leaders accepted the award during SPJ’s virtual event on August 7.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted the Black community and Black businesses. As the region’s largest publication serving the Black community, we took this as an opportunity to ensure that our audience had access to the vital information and resources they need to keep their families safe and their businesses running,” said Russell Motley, editor-in-chief of Legacy magazines. “We appreciate our media peers for recognizing the importance of this issue and its impact on the entire South Florida community.”

Released on May 6, 2020, Legacy’s Surviving COVID-19” was dedicated to essential workers. The award-winning issue showcased how the first African-American FDLE Special Agent In Charge was making life-saving decisions for South Florida during the crisis, profiled a Black-owned telemedical company helping patients navigate the pandemic, and revealed ways Broward Health was helping residents with COVID-19 testing and treatment. Professionally, the issue gave readers insights on preparing for virtual interviews, remaining engaged with social media, and tips to help ease the financial impact of the pandemic. On a business note, the publication unpacked relief disparities experienced by Black-owned businesses, shared tips on how small businesses can thrive despite the pandemic, and showcased novel approaches to online negotiation and mediation.

"We appreciate all the sponsors, partners, and officials that supported this issue and helped Legacy serve the underserved and empower our community. We also are grateful for the support of our publisher Dexter Bridgeman and our dedicated staff that includes Yanela McLeod, Shannel Escoffery, and Sabrina Moss-Solomon,” Motley said.

SPJ is a national organization dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty. SPJ's Florida Pro Chapter's annual Sunshine State Awards are open to all professional print, television, radio, or digital journalists working in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Legacy competed in the category of trade or Special interest publication. The category scrutinizes entries for best overall quality, including news value, in a publication focusing on a specialized audience.  Legacy bested its competitors and captured first prize.
