(BPRW) Morgan State University Music Programs Receive National Association of Schools of Music Reaccreditation Through 2033-34

(Black PR Wire) Morgan State University’s Department of Fine & Performing Arts has received full reaccreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) for its Bachelor of Arts in Music and Master of Arts in Music programs, extending through the 2033–34 review cycle. Following a comprehensive self-study and multi-day peer review, NASM affirmed that Morgan’s music programs meet or exceed national standards across curriculum, faculty qualifications, facilities, assessment, student support, and educational outcomes.

Housed within the James H. Gilliam, Jr. College of Liberal Arts (CLA), the Department of Fine and Performing Arts continues to uphold Morgan’s reputation for academic excellence in music education.  The reaccreditation underscores the University’s commitment to equipping music students with a well-rounded education that balances performance, teaching, and technical mastery. Students graduate with the skills necessary to excel in performance, composition, improvisation, analysis, and music history while also completing a strong foundation in liberal arts and humanities courses designed to broaden their perspectives and critical thinking.

“This achievement means a lot to both the music faculty and me regarding our Music program,” said Dr. Eric Conway, chairperson of the Fine & Performing Arts Department and conductor of the Morgan State University Choir. “We believe we are doing a great job teaching our students. However, receiving validation from an independent organization shows the world that our program meets or exceeds the standards in music when compared to other institutions nationwide.”

The Department offers a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Music, with three concentrations for instrumentalists, keyboard players, and vocalists. Students may apply to the Graduate School in their junior year to obtain the Master of Teaching degree (M.A.T.). At the graduate level, the Master of Arts in Music program provides a core curriculum in applied lessons, music theory, and music history, along with a broad selection of elective courses to support individual interests and career goals.

Founded in 1924, NASM is the national accrediting agency for music and music-related disciplines in the U.S., setting standards for undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The association establishes rigorous standards for undergraduate and graduate degree programs, ensuring quality and accountability across accredited institutions.

Added Conway, “Everyone in the Music faculty contributed to this positive result. Our goal is to provide the best instruction possible for our Morgan students!
