Veteran Public Servant Pledges Results-Driven Leadership for South Fulton’s Future
(Black PR Wire) South Fulton, GA — Community leader and longtime public servant Sojourner Marable Grimmett today announced her candidacy for Fulton County Commissioner, District 5, entering the May 2026 race with a record of turning community priorities into measurable results.
With more than 25 years of leadership across government, healthcare, education, and affordable housing, Grimmett is running on a clear, five-point agenda focused on issues residents say matter most: public safety and criminal justice reform; affordable housing and support for seniors; access to healthcare and emergency services; economic growth and workforce development; and infrastructure, community well-being, and expanded opportunities for youth.
“South Fulton County is full of promise, but too many families are still waiting to see that promise reflected in their daily lives,” said Grimmett. “This campaign is about delivering real results — safer neighborhoods, stable housing, accessible healthcare, and economic opportunity that reaches every corner of our community.”
Grimmett’s career includes leading initiatives that directly align with those priorities. She has helped expand affordable senior housing across Georgia, secured more than $1 million in COVID-19 relief for underserved neighborhoods, and supported efforts that improved healthcare access for over 1.4 million Georgians. She also played a key role in installing lactation pods at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, advancing equity for working families.
As a senior leader with Peach State Health Plan, Grimmett managed a multi-million-dollar operational budget, reducing costs while improving internal systems — experience she says is critical as Fulton County faces growing demands and limited resources.
“I’m not running to learn on the job,” Grimmett said. “I’ve spent decades listening to residents, working with elected officials and community partners, and getting tough things done. South Fulton County deserves experienced leadership that’s ready on Day One.”
The daughter of the late historian Dr. Manning Marable and community activist Hazel Ann Harris, Grimmett was raised with a deep commitment to public service and social and economic justice. She has been an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for more than 25 years and Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated, and has been recognized for her leadership by organizations across the region, including honors as a Top 100 Black Women of Influence, an Outstanding Atlanta Honoree, and a 40 Under 40 recipient from both Georgia Trend and the Atlanta Business Chronicle.
A graduate of Clark Atlanta University and Pennsylvania State University, Grimmett has lived in South Fulton County with her husband, Roland, and their two sons for more than two decades.
