MONICA WOOD is president and owner of MWPR, Inc. In the three and a half years it has operated, MWPR, Inc. has experienced much success and growth. They have been retained by such diverse clientele as Urban Influence Magazine (an official publication of the National Urban League), Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., NKIRU Watches, The Carpenter's House Foundation (foundation of retired Atlanta Falcons player Keion Carpenter), Red Bull, and the Foundation for the Advancement of African Americans in Film (FAAAF) to name a few.
Prior to forming the firm, Wood worked for Golin/Harris International as an account group supervisor. For five years she co-managed the McDonald's account""one of Golin/Harris' largest and longest tenured Corporate Consumer clients. She also played a key role in the development of Golin/Harris' Diversity Specialty Practice and has extensive experience in reaching the African American market through earned and paid media relations efforts.
Before joining Golin/Harris as a senior account executive, Wood had already built a career managing marketing programs, communications and special events for major retailers, publishing and advertising companies, including The Rouse Company and The AFRO-American Newspaper Company. As director of promotions and charities for the AFRO, she developed and executed promotions and marketing campaigns highlighting the AFRO's rich history within the African American community to its readers as well as the general market. In December 1997, Presstime Magazine recognized Wood in their annual special edition as one of "20 Under 40". This national recognition highlights the accomplishments and contributions made by 20 professionals under the age of 40 to the newspaper industry.
In 1996, as promotions director, Wood created, produced and hosted the AFRO's weekly public affairs talk show"""AFRO Tuesday Edition", now the "First Edition" on Morgan State University's radio station WEAA 88.9 FM. And, in April 2006, she returned as the host, a position she held until recently relocating to Charlotte, NC in January 2007.
Wood has received several awards recognizing her work and community efforts. In June 2007, she was recognized by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc. as their 2007 "Distinguished Service" award recipient.
A third generation graduate of Morgan State University, Wood holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Communications. She is a member of the National Association of Female Executives, National Association of Black Journalists, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
