The Honorable Mayor Oliver G. Gilbert is a lifelong resident of the city that is now Miami Gardens, which was incorporated in 2003. Mr. Gilbert was appointed to the Miami Gardens City Council on March 26, 2008 to fill the vacant Seat 6. He was subsequently elected to office in the August 26, 2008 election. Mr. Gilbert was sworn in as Mayor on August 30, 2012.
Mr. Gilbert's first position after graduating from the University of Miami Law School with honors in 2000, was as the legislative assistant to then-State Representative Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall. He has also served as an Assistant State Attorney in Broward County. The Mayor currently serves as Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Local Black Elected Officials, and is the only African-American on the Executive Committee of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities. Additionally, he is a member of the North County Citizen's Association; the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University National Alumni Association; the Sigma Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated; and Miami Fellows "" Class V.
Mayor Gilbert is a graduate of Miami Norland Senior High School, Florida A&M University and the University of Miami. He is also the proud father of a six-year-old son, Oliver IV.
The City of Miami Gardens was incorporated on May 13, 2003, as the 33rd city in Miami-Dade County. At a population of 105,457, it is the third largest city in Miami-Dade County. The City is located in the north-central region of the County, mid-way between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, and is easily accessed by I-95, the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and the Florida Turnpike. The City comprises approximately 20 square miles.
Miami Gardens is home to Sun Life Stadium (used by the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami Hurricanes football teams) and Calder Race Track. It is also the home of two higher education institutions, Florida Memorial University, south Florida's only historically black college and university (HBCU), and St. Thomas University.
